Tottenham is significantly increasing its transfer spending, with the club set to surpass its record for a single transfer window. This follows the acquisitions of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. The combined fees for these two players are reported to be £185m, contributing to a total outlay of £237m for the current window, which exceeds the £225m spent in the summer of 2023.

The club’s aggressive approach in the transfer market has drawn attention from rival clubs, especially given that Spurs finished 17th in the league. Manager Roberto De Zerbi has been a key figure in these developments, having reportedly completed business in midfield and defence, with plans to strengthen the attack next.

De Zerbi’s Influence and Strategic Acquisitions

The influence of Roberto De Zerbi is highlighted as a significant factor in attracting high-calibre players. Sandro Tonali, for instance, mentioned the importance of De Zerbi in his decision to join the club. This influence was also evident in the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke.

De Zerbi is described as one of the most hands-on head coaches at Spurs regarding transfer business in recent times. The club’s ambition is reflected in its ability to secure both Tonali and Fernandes, despite initial doubts about completing both deals. All agreements were reportedly finalised by July 1, marking a departure from previous transfer windows for the club.

The acquisition of Mateus Fernandes was particularly notable, with Spurs reportedly determined to outbid Manchester United for the player. This move is seen as a statement of intent, especially after United secured Bryan Mbeumo over Spurs a year prior.

Financial Strategy and Future Plans

Changes in the club’s leadership and strategy have facilitated this increased spending. Daniel Levy departed as chairman at the beginning of last season, with Vinai Venkatesham and Peter Charrington now operating under the Lewis family. The new leadership had pledged to invest the club’s generated revenue into improving the first team.

Financially, there are reportedly no concerns about violating the new Squad Cost Ratio rules, which replaced PSR on July 1. Spurs are said to be among the clubs that benefit most from these rule changes, partly due to strong revenues from their stadium, which hosts concerts, boxing matches, and NFL UK games. The club has also participated in European competitions in 18 of the last 20 seasons.

Spurs were ranked ninth globally in the latest Deloitte Football Money League table for revenue generation, positioned just behind Manchester United and ahead of Chelsea, indicating the club’s financial strength.

Squad Adjustments and Departures

Despite the new arrivals, the club anticipates sales to manage squad size, especially without European competition this season. Six new players have already joined, necessitating some departures to create space within the squad.

Among those expected to move on is Luka Vuskovic, who is joining Brighton for £50m. Despite never playing a competitive match for Spurs, having been acquired for approximately £9m, his sale represents the club’s fourth-largest ever. Lucas Bergvall has expressed a desire to leave and has attracted interest from Nottingham Forest, though he has reportedly been told he will not be departing. Pape Matar Sarr is another potential exit, with interest from Brentford.

Cristian Romero could also leave if a suitable offer is made, given the current presence of six central defenders in the squad. Richarlison is in the final year of his contract, requiring a decision on his future. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is also likely to depart, with interest from Italy. Antonin Kinsky is expected to become the primary goalkeeper after a strong performance at the end of last season, with Martin Dubravka joining as an understudy.

The club’s early transfer activity, bringing in Premier League-proven players, is seen as transformative, aligning with De Zerbi’s goal of pushing for Europe immediately. Sandro Tonali, a 26-year-old midfielder, joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55m.
