Fernandes Joins Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur has announced the signing of Mateus Fernandes, a 21-year-old Portugal international midfielder, from West Ham United. The deal for Fernandes is understood to be worth £85m, a figure that would surpass the club’s previous transfer record of £65m paid for Dominic Solanke in August 2024. Fernandes has been granted permission to undergo his medical at Spurs.
Manchester United had also pursued Fernandes, but ultimately were unwilling to match the £85m offer made by Spurs. Reports indicate that Tottenham was determined to secure Fernandes and would have matched any bid from United. West Ham officials reportedly considered Fernandes to be one of the top young players in the Premier League last season, with potential comparable to Declan Rice, who was sold for £105m in 2023.

Player and Coach Reactions
Upon joining, Mateus Fernandes expressed his excitement for the move, stating that Tottenham is a significant club and that discussions with the Head Coach were a key factor in his decision. He noted a shared vision for football, focusing on a strong, energetic team approach to win matches. Fernandes looks forward to meeting the fans and contributing fully to the club.
Sporting Director Johan Lange welcomed Fernandes, highlighting his technical ability, intelligence, and maturity. Lange believes Tottenham is the ideal environment for Fernandes to advance his career, working with the coaching staff and ambitious teammates. He anticipates supporters will enjoy watching Fernandes, who possesses the talent and work ethic to become an important player for the club’s present and future.
Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi praised Fernandes, whom he has admired for his combination of on-ball quality, intensity, and intelligence, which aligns with the team’s playing style. De Zerbi noted Fernandes’s experience in the Premier League despite his age, as well as his ability to perform under pressure, progress the ball, and work diligently for the team. He believes this environment will foster Fernandes’s continued development.
Career Trajectory and Performance
Fernandes has accumulated valuable Premier League experience over the past two seasons. He initially made an impression at Southampton before moving to West Ham. A product of Sporting CP’s academy, he joined them from Olhanense in 2016 and progressed through their ranks over eight years.
He regularly featured for Sporting’s B team in the third tier at 17 years old in the 2021/22 season. The following campaign, he debuted for the first team in the Primeira Liga in October 2022, and four days later, made his UEFA Champions League debut at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a 1-1 group stage draw. He concluded that season with seven first-team appearances, including a UEFA Europa League knockout game.
In the 2023/24 season, Fernandes was loaned to Estoril, where he played 28 league matches and helped the team reach their first cup final in 80 years. He then joined Southampton at the age of 20, where he ranked in the top 10 for duels won with 208 across 36 Premier League appearances in 2024/25, contributing two goals and four assists, including a stoppage-time goal in a 3-1 defeat.
Fernandes was a consistent presence in midfield during his first season in England, earning Southampton’s Player of the Season award before his transfer to West Ham in August 2025. He made his debut for the Hammers two days after signing and was a regular in the Premier League, adding another 36 appearances to his record. His strong defensive work rate and ball-carrying skills made him a standout performer, finishing joint-fifth for most tackles in the league with 103, and contributing three goals and four assists last term. He also secured West Ham’s Goal of the Season award for a long-range effort in a home victory against Sunderland in January.
Fernandes has represented Portugal at various youth levels, from Under-18s to Under-21s. His club form led to a call-up to the senior squad in March 2026, where he earned his first cap as a late substitute in a 2-0 win over the USA on 1 April.
