Djokovic’s Wimbledon Performance and On-Court Humour
Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of Wimbledon after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. The victory was described as an “almost flawless” performance, with one commentator noting it was the best Djokovic had played since the Australian Open. His dominant display allowed for a relaxed atmosphere on court, leading to a light-hearted moment with a ball kid.
During a break between the second and third sets, while Tsitsipas was off court, Djokovic engaged in a prank. He asked a ball kid to assist him in trimming some excess material from his shoulder. As she made the cut, Djokovic flinched, pretending she had nicked him, which caused her to jump. He quickly reassured her it was a joke, apologising immediately afterwards and explaining that such antics surface when he is two sets up.

The Serbian player later commented on the incident, saying, “I’m sorry if I scared her, it was probably not that great of a joke, I guess. Just made me a bit more relaxed.” The ball kid was seen laughing courtside, indicating she saw the humour in the situation. This moment of levity occurred as Djokovic continued his bid for a Grand Slam title.
A Challenge for the Green Jacket
Following his win, Djokovic noticed several notable figures in the Royal Box, including Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald, all members of the Team Europe Ryder Cup side. Djokovic led the crowd in applause for McIlroy’s Masters triumph earlier in the season. He then turned his attention to McIlroy’s attire.
Djokovic openly expressed his desire for McIlroy’s Masters jacket, asking, “Rory what a beautiful jacket, is that a Masters jacket? It must be. Round of applause for Rory for Masters please. I want that jacket, I’ll play you – this jacket for that jacket! We play tennis, not golf!” This challenge was made in a jovial spirit, highlighting the camaraderie among the athletes.
The Masters jacket is a highly coveted prize in golf, and McIlroy is a winner of the event. Djokovic himself has been wearing a white blazer with green piping at Wimbledon, adhering to the club’s dress code. The prospect of McIlroy accepting a tennis match for the jacket remains to be seen, though Djokovic is certainly moving on to the third round at Wimbledon.
