Welsh Fire Men Secure Victory
Welsh Fire men’s team began their 2026 Hundred season with a six-wicket win against Southern Brave at Utilita Bowl in Southampton. Captain Phil Salt played a significant role, remaining unbeaten with 47 runs, guiding his team to victory while chasing a target of 136 runs. Salt, who is the competition’s all-time leading scorer with 1,138 runs from five seasons with his former side Manchester Originals, aims to lead the Welsh franchise to their first title after they finished at the bottom of both the men’s and women’s tables last season.
During the chase, Salt initially supported fellow opener Matt Short, who contributed 20 runs. Salt then formed partnerships with Joe Root, who scored 14, and Rachin Ravindra, who added 24 runs. With nine runs still needed from the final five balls, Asa Tribe hit a boundary off Brave captain Chris Jordan’s first delivery. Salt then secured the win with a six two balls later.
When Southern Brave batted first, they lost openers Jamie Smith and Ben McKinney for single-digit scores. However, 18-year-old Thomas Rew helped rebuild their innings with a rapid 41 runs from 30 balls. Welsh Fire’s bowlers, particularly Marco Jansen, who finished with figures of 2-17, managed to control the scoring rate for much of the innings. David Miller, despite a slow start, finished strongly for Brave with 44 runs from 35 balls before being dismissed on the penultimate delivery, contributing to their total of 135-7, which ultimately proved insufficient.
Southern Brave Women Triumph in Close Contest
In the women’s competition, Southern Brave, the 2025 Hundred finalists, secured an eight-run comeback victory against Welsh Fire Women at Utilita Bowl. Brave captain Sophie Molineux was a key performer, taking three wickets and scoring 22 runs from 16 balls. Southern Brave set Welsh Fire a target of 127 runs, with Laura Wolvaardt top-scoring for Brave with an unbeaten 45 runs from 36 deliveries. For Welsh Fire, Heather Graham recorded impressive bowling figures of 4-19.
Welsh Fire initially appeared to be in control of their chase, largely due to a strong innings from Georgia Voll, who scored 52 runs from 39 deliveries. Freya Kemp further extended Fire’s advantage by adding 39 runs before being run out by a direct hit from Jemimah Rodrigues. Despite this moment of brilliance from Rodrigues, Brave had fielding difficulties, dropping seven catches, including one from Georgia Voll.
At one point, with 80 runs for two wickets and 41 balls remaining, Welsh Fire seemed to be in a strong position. However, Molineux, alongside England’s Lauren Bell, rallied her team. Molineux dismissed Sophie Devine, who had clipped a shot to Lizelle Lee behind the stumps, after already taking the wicket of Ella McCaughan. Wickets then began to fall rapidly for Welsh Fire. Tilly Corteen-Coleman ended Voll’s innings, with the Australian batter caught at long on by Maia Bouchier. Shortly after, Issy Wong caught Georgia Wareham off a Lauren Bell delivery. Bell then claimed her second wicket of the match by bowling Em Arlott, leaving Welsh Fire needing 16 runs from 11 deliveries.
The late surge from Southern Brave proved decisive. Molineux snared Niamh Holland, and then Corteen-Coleman bowled Heather Graham, restricting Welsh Fire to 118 runs in their innings. Lauren Bell highlighted the dismissal of Devine as a critical turning point, noting that once they secured one wicket, more followed, allowing them to demonstrate their composure at the end of the match. She also acknowledged the initial nerves and dropped catches, but emphasized the team’s ability to perform under pressure.

The Hundred competition continues on Thursday with a double-header at Lord’s in London. London Spirit will face Manchester Super Giants, with the women’s game scheduled to start at 14:45 BST and the men’s match at 18:30 BST.
