The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has indicated that financial “exceptions” have been implemented as part of their efforts to appoint Pep Guardiola as the next head coach of the Italy national team. Giovanni Malagò, the president of the FIGC, confirmed that these exceptions are specifically for a prominent figure like Guardiola, though he did not elaborate on the details.
Guardiola concluded his 10-year tenure with Manchester City at the end of last season, during which he secured six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and the Champions League. His departure left him free to consider new roles, and he has been linked with the Italy vacancy for some time. Reports earlier this week suggested that Guardiola has already engaged in discussions with the FIGC.
The coaching position became available after Gennaro Gattuso resigned in April, following Italy’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. This marks a significant low point for Italian football, which has also seen an early exit from European club competitions last season. FIGC’s Vision for National Team Rebuild
Officials from the FIGC, including Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo, met with Guardiola in Barcelona over three days. During these meetings, they outlined their vision for the national team’s future. The FIGC is reportedly prepared to make “exceptional” adjustments to its budget to secure Guardiola’s services, reflecting the importance they place on his potential appointment.
The proposal presented to Guardiola extends beyond a typical coaching role. The FIGC envisions him as a central figure in an ‘Azzurro project’ aimed at comprehensively rebuilding Italian football. This ambitious plan would encompass not only the senior national team but also all other national teams, signifying a complete overhaul of the system. Guardiola reportedly listened to the offer attentively and is currently considering his response.
Malagò mentioned that while Guardiola is a prominent name under consideration, he is not the only candidate on their shortlist. Other reported candidates for the role include Roberto Mancini, who led Italy to Euro 2020 success, and former Azzurri midfielder Andrea Pirlo. Malagò clarified that the FIGC is looking for a specific profile, and these names fit within that category, but they are not the only individuals being considered.
Guardiola’s Post-City Plans and International Interest
Upon leaving Manchester City, Guardiola had expressed an intention to take a break from football. He stated that he needed to step back and would not coach for a while, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and acknowledging that he might not have the daily energy required for club management. He also mentioned wanting to do things he hadn’t done, including spending more time with his father and children.
However, Guardiola has previously indicated an interest in international management. In a 2024 interview, he stated that he would not leave Manchester City to undertake a similar role in another country, as he would lack the energy for the extensive training process involved. He added that a national team role, however, would be different and potentially appealing. This suggests that international management could offer a balance between his desire for a less demanding schedule and his passion for coaching.
The opportunity to rebuild the Italian national team, particularly after three consecutive World Cup qualification failures, is reportedly an appealing prospect for Guardiola. Despite this, he is said to be conscious of the all-consuming nature of the job and has requested more time to consider the offer.
