England secured the top position in Group L after a 2-0 victory against Panama, with goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. The match, played in New York, saw England needing to restore momentum after a previous draw against Ghana.

Manager Thomas Tuchel made several changes to the lineup, aiming for urgency and tempo. Jarell Quansah started at right-back in place of the injured Reece James, while Declan Rice was rested due to a knock and a yellow card. Bellingham played in a deeper role, and Morgan Rogers made his first start.

First Half Struggles

The initial 45 minutes of the match proved challenging for England. Despite Tuchel‘s tactical adjustments, including asking Nico O’Reilly to step up from left-back to form a back three when England had possession, the team struggled to break down a compact Panama side. Marcus Rashford had an early effort saved, and Bukayo Saka was denied by a block.

Panama, playing in a 5-4-1 formation, did not sit deep and managed to find spaces, creating moments of anxiety for England. Jordan Pickford was called into action, making a save from a Jose Luis Rodriguez effort in the first half. England‘s play was described as slow and predictable, with Panama effectively shuffling across to defend against wide attacks from Saka and Rashford.

Second Half Breakthrough

The second half saw an improved performance from England. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring from a corner delivered by Bukayo Saka. Bellingham‘s expertly steered low volley provided the breakthrough, though Tuchel‘s reaction to the goal was noted as being annoyed rather than celebratory, indicating his continued concerns about the overall display.

Shortly after, Bellingham was instrumental in England‘s second goal. He made a typical surge up the inside-left, jinking past defenders before delivering a cross for Harry Kane to head home. This goal marked Kane‘s 11th World Cup goal, surpassing Gary Lineker‘s record for the nation.

Player Performances and Substitutions

Several players received ratings for their performances. Jordan Pickford made a good save but had some loose clearances, earning a rating of 6. Jarell Quansah, making his first World Cup start at right-back, was solid defensively but came off with an ankle injury in the second half, also rated 6. Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi were both rated 6 for their defensive efforts.

Nico O’Reilly, with his ability to move into midfield and threat in the air, received a 6. Elliot Anderson, described as the starting number six, kept the ball moving and injected pace into attacks, earning a 7. Jude Bellingham, with a goal and an assist, was highlighted as England‘s X-factor and received the highest rating of 8. Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers were both rated 6, while Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane received 7 for their contributions.

Substitutions included Djed Spence replacing the injured Quansah, Noni Madueke coming on for Saka, and Eberechi Eze replacing Bellingham. Ollie Watkins and Jordan Henderson were also introduced later in the game. Panama exited the tournament with zero points, having not secured any points in their World Cup appearances, but left with a measure of pride.
