Following the match, Mbappe spoke to French broadcaster M6, stating that the team did not play to their desired level, citing issues with tactics, technical execution, and overall performance. He emphasised that failing to perform adequately in a World Cup semi-final inevitably leads to defeat. Mbappe had been a key player for France throughout the tournament, scoring eight goals.
Mbappe highlighted that France‘s strategy was to press Spain high up the pitch to disrupt their controlled playing style. He acknowledged that Spain excels at controlling the game, and France‘s failure to execute their pressing strategy contributed to the loss. The striker’s ambition for a World Cup final appearance was cut short as Spain dominated the match at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Midfield struggles and team disappointment
A significant issue identified by Mbappe was the midfield battle, where France‘s duo of Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni were frequently outnumbered by Spain‘s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabian Ruiz. Mbappe noted that being outnumbered 3-on-2 in midfield against Spain is a considerable problem, ultimately leading to their defeat and causing immense disappointment within the squad.
