England’s World Cup Campaign Ends in Semi-Final Defeat
England captain Harry Kane has stated that the team is “missing that final piece of the jigsaw” following their 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions initially took the lead in Atlanta but ultimately lost after conceding two late goals.

Kane expressed his disappointment, noting that despite being “close, really close to another final,” their efforts were not enough. He acknowledged the high expectations placed on the squad, stating that they have been “knocking on the door for eight years now” but are still searching for the missing piece to achieve success.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney commented on the team’s performance, suggesting that Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive.” This led to them missing out on a World Cup final appearance, a feat not achieved since 1966.
Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny
Manager Thomas Tuchel has faced criticism regarding his tactical decisions, particularly his defensive substitutions during the match against Argentina. Reports indicate that England maintained only 12% possession from the time they took the lead until conceding the second goal in the 92nd minute.
Several sources have suggested that key players were left disappointed by the team’s approach in the latter stages of the game. However, Tuchel has maintained that dropping deeper was not the intended strategy, and that controlling possession might not be inherent to England’s playing style.

Looking Ahead to the Third-Place Play-Off and Beyond
Following their semi-final exit, England is set to play France in a third-place play-off match. France was defeated by Spain in the other semi-final.
Jude Bellingham, who scored six goals during the tournament alongside Kane, shared a poem titled ‘The Lions Way’ and called for “unity” among the team and supporters. He emphasised that collective effort can lead to significant achievements for the country.
Midfielder Morgan Rogers, who assisted Gordon’s goal against Argentina, expressed his devastation at the defeat, stating that the team gave their all. Gordon also shared his disappointment, having believed this was England’s opportunity to win the tournament.
The chief executive of the Football Association, Mark Bullingham, has backed England to learn from their defeat and compete for silverware when they co-host the European Championships in 2028. He expects Tuchel to prepare the team for this upcoming tournament. England will be one of four host nations for the next Euros, alongside Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
The third-place play-off match against France is scheduled for Saturday.
