Butt’s strong words on Tuchel’s future
Following England‘s elimination from the World Cup semi-finals, former England international Nicky Butt has called for an immediate change in the national team’s management. England, having taken the lead through Anthony Gordon, ultimately lost to Argentina after two late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez secured Argentina’s place in the final, denying England their first final appearance since 1966.
Butt expressed his strong opinion to Paddy Power, stating there is “no way” Thomas Tuchel can remain as manager. He further suggested that if Tuchel were to stay, John McDermott, the technical director, should also be dismissed. Butt criticised Tuchel’s approach, particularly his decision to adopt a defensive strategy in the semi-final against Argentina, which he described as “crazy negative football.”
Butt believes Tuchel, despite his success as a club manager, failed to inspire the public and played into the opposition’s hands. He pointed to Tuchel’s decision to bring on Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, and Dan Burn as a tactical misstep that backfired. Butt also acknowledged that Tuchel’s German nationality might contribute to public sentiment against him.
Potential replacements for the England role
With the managerial position under scrutiny, Butt identified several potential candidates to lead the national team. His top choices are Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola. While he acknowledged Guardiola’s recent departure from Manchester City after a historic 10-year tenure, which included six Premier League titles and a Champions League victory, Butt suggested the timing might be problematic for Guardiola to immediately take on the England role.
Butt praised Howe’s transformation of Newcastle since 2021, guiding them to two Champions League campaigns and a League Cup triumph, making him a strong contender. Butt stated he would “love” Howe to take the position. Additionally, Butt mentioned Mauricio Pochettino as a genuine possibility, citing his existing relationship with FA technical director John McDermott from their time together at Tottenham.
Pochettino recently led the USMNT to the round of 16 in the current World Cup, where they were defeated 4-1 by Belgium. Butt noted that Pochettino is a “very, very good manager” who plays “good football everywhere he goes.”
Focus on future development and mentality
Beyond managerial changes, Butt also advocated for a long-term strategy focused on developing young talent and fostering a winning mentality within the England squad. He suggested that the FA should consider effectively writing off the next Euros in 2028 to build a team capable of winning the 2030 World Cup.
As part of this plan, Butt proposed immediately calling up Arsenal youngster Max Dowman to the England squad. He suggested the midfielder should play in “every international break from now on.” Dowman looks destined to become an England regular having broke into Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team last season.
Butt believes that developing a winning mentality needs to start at a young age, arguing that players cannot simply become winners at 22 or 23. He emphasized the need to develop teams that can win football games, even if it means taking a few steps backward initially. Tuchel, however, defended his tactics, suggesting that the issue lay with the “DNA” of English football, which he felt lacked the ball possession and control seen in other footballing nations.
Argentina, the reigning champions, will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday after Spain defeated France.
