Foden Extends Stay at Etihad
Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City, committing his future to the club until 2030, with an option for an additional 12 months. The agreement secures the 26-year-old’s presence at the Etihad Stadium, where he has been a central figure under the new manager, Enzo Maresca. Discussions regarding the contract extension had been ongoing since late 2025.
Foden expressed his commitment to the club, stating that playing for Manchester City has always been his ambition and wearing the shirt is an honour. He acknowledged being part of a historic period with numerous titles and emphasised the team’s continuous pursuit of more silverware.
The midfielder’s previous contract was set to conclude next summer, leading to some speculation about his future, particularly given his occasional absence from the starting line-up over the past two seasons. Despite experiencing physical ailments and the mental strain of a challenging season, the club has demonstrated faith in the academy graduate, who began training with City at the age of six.
Reunion with Enzo Maresca
Foden also shared his enthusiasm for reuniting with new manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca, a former City academy manager, served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022-23 season. Foden highlighted Maresca’s positive impact during that period, noting that he was respected and enjoyed by the players.
The 2022-23 season, during Maresca’s tenure as assistant, saw Foden significantly increase his goal output. This progression continued into the 2023-24 campaign, where he recorded 19 goals and eight assists, earning him the Premier League Player of the Season award. Foden’s new contract effectively ends speculation about a potential summer departure from his boyhood club.

Hugo Viana, Manchester City’s director of football, praised Foden as a unique talent and a testament to the club’s academy. Viana commended Foden’s focus, dedication, and humility, noting that these qualities have been crucial to his achievements. He also mentioned that Foden’s development is still ongoing, and the club anticipates his continued growth in the coming years.
Pre-Season Preparations and Future Outlook
The contract announcement coincides with the start of City’s pre-season preparations. The team is scheduled to travel to Hong Kong next week, followed by a trip to Seoul, South Korea. Foden, having missed out on the World Cup, will be one of the few first-team players available to Maresca during the Asian tour, offering him an opportunity to gain a head start on his teammates.
City is set to play Inter in Hong Kong on Saturday, August 1, before facing K-League All Stars and Atletico Madrid in Seoul. Foden made 50 appearances across all competitions for City last season, in addition to four appearances for England in World Cup qualifiers and March friendlies.
Despite some form struggles in recent seasons, particularly after his spectacular performances at the end of the 2023-24 season, Manchester City maintains full confidence in Foden’s ability to return to his best. His agent, Rafaela Pimenta, who also represents City teammate Erling Haaland, negotiated the new terms and will continue to work with Foden on off-pitch matters.
