Morgan Rogers interview: On joy, family and finding his best self | News | Official Site

Morgan Rogers has completed a move to Chelsea from Aston Villa for a fee, signing a seven-year deal. This transfer makes him the Blues’ record signing. The agreement was reached on Saturday, with Chelsea securing the England international ahead of Arsenal, who had also been in discussions to sign the player.

A significant factor in Rogers’ decision to choose west London was the opportunity to work under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. Rogers expressed excitement about Alonso’s approach to the game, stating it aligns with his own vision for play. He also noted his long-standing admiration for Chelsea, considering them the biggest club in London since his childhood.

Rogers is looking forward to the club’s direction, the project with the new manager, and the current squad. He also anticipates playing alongside his friend Cole Palmer, a prospect they have discussed for years. The upcoming season will mark their first time playing senior football together at the domestic level for the same team.

Rogers’ Journey and Family Influence

Rogers, who will turn 24 on Sunday, shared insights into his footballing philosophy, emphasising the importance of joy and spirit in his game. He aims to maintain this happiness despite the pressures of playing at the top level. His family has played a crucial role in his journey, providing support and encouraging him to be his best self.

His elder brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea, has also been a significant influence. Daniel’s guidance has helped Rogers navigate the challenges and increased scrutiny that come with playing at a high level, including representing England at this summer’s World Cup.

Rogers reflected on past challenges, including difficult loan spells from Manchester City to Lincoln, Bournemouth, and Blackpool. These experiences, which included not playing regularly and fighting against relegation, helped him develop resilience and a stronger mentality. He views these setbacks as instrumental in shaping his career and personal growth.

The versatile forward’s rapid ascent at Villa Park followed his move from Middlesbrough in January 2024. During his time at Aston Villa, he contributed to the team’s top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League last season. He scored goals in appearances under Unai Emery before his transfer to Chelsea.

Chelsea’s Strategic Acquisitions

Rogers’ acquisition is a notable move for Chelsea under the ownership of BlueCo, marking one of their most significant purchases in their four-year tenure. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali indicated a shift in transfer strategy towards players who can help the club contend for titles, following an earlier campaign where the team finished 10th and exited the Champions League in the last 16.

The appointment of Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, and a two-time Champions League winner as a player, was partly intended to attract high-calibre players to Chelsea. Rogers’ transfer is considered one of the club’s most impactful deals since Cole Palmer joined from Manchester City in 2023.

Rogers is the fourth signing for Chelsea this summer as the club continues to rebuild its squad. He follows the arrivals of defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda. This overhaul comes after the club’s unsuccessful attempt in June to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, as Chelsea was unwilling to meet Sunderland’s valuation for the player.
