Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to the octagon concluded abruptly on Saturday, lasting just over a minute. The Irish fighter sustained a knee injury during his UFC 329 bout against Max Holloway in Las Vegas, leading to his retirement from the fight.
McGregor, a former two-weight world champion, had not competed since July 2021, when he broke his leg against Dustin Poirier. In the opening round of Saturday’s fight, he attempted a flying kick but landed awkwardly. He immediately appeared to be in distress and signalled to the referee that he could not continue.
The fight was stopped after just 69 seconds, with Holloway securing the victory via TKO. McGregor was seen limping out of the octagon with assistance from his team. The injury occurred in his right knee, and while the full extent is yet to be confirmed, UFC doctors have suggested a possible torn ACL.
Following the fight, McGregor issued a statement, describing the experience as “hell.” He asserted that he had no prior injuries leading into the fight, stating he had been throwing kicks and jumping throughout his training camp and backstage warm-ups. He described the injury as coming “out of nowhere.”
This incident has sparked discussions about McGregor’s future in combat sports. He previously suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during his first fight against Holloway in 2013, undergoing surgery and returning to the octagon 11 months later. However, at 37 years old, the recovery period for this new injury could be different.
The bout marked the second time McGregor and Holloway had faced each other. Their first encounter in 2013 saw McGregor win by unanimous decision. Holloway, a former featherweight champion, expressed his willingness to discuss a potential third fight once McGregor recovers.
Injury and career setbacks
McGregor’s career has been impacted by various injuries and issues outside of the sport. After breaking his leg against Poirier five years ago, he was scheduled to fight Michael Chandler in June 2024. However, that fight was cancelled after McGregor suffered a broken toe during training.
Beyond physical injuries, McGregor has also faced legal and disciplinary challenges. In 2024, an Irish civil court jury found him liable for the rape of Nikita Hand in 2018. He appealed the verdict, but it was upheld. He continues to deny all allegations.
In October 2025, McGregor accepted an 18-month ban for “whereabouts failures” after missing three attempts by Combat Sports Anti-Doping to collect biological samples in 2024. This ban was backdated and expired in March, making him eligible to compete again.
The specifics of McGregor’s current knee injury are still being determined. Commentator Joe Rogan suggested the injury might involve the ACL, which can require six to 12 months for healing. This timeline could mean McGregor might not be able to train effectively until next July and potentially not fight until next autumn.
Before UFC 329, McGregor had indicated he had dates for two upcoming fights on his contract, with one potentially scheduled for April 2027. However, the recent injury casts uncertainty on these plans and his ability to fulfil his contractual obligations.

The co-main event at the T-Mobile Arena also saw a quick finish, with Britain’s Paddy Pimblett defeating Frenchman Benoit Saint-Denis in their lightweight bout in less than a minute via D’arce choke.
McGregor’s return to the octagon was his first fight in five years, following his leg break in 2021 and the subsequent toe injury in 2024, as well as the legal and anti-doping issues.
Uncertain future
The recent injury has led to speculation about whether McGregor will be able to make another comeback or if this setback could signal the end of his combat sports career. His previous ACL tear in 2013 occurred in his left knee, and he underwent surgery by Dr. Neal Ellattrache, returning to competition relatively quickly.

However, with the new injury affecting his right knee and his age, the recovery process may be more challenging. The duration of his absence from competition will depend on the full extent of the injury and his rehabilitation.
Holloway, who was outpointed by McGregor in their first fight, expressed his desire for a trilogy bout, indicating that he was not satisfied with the manner of his victory on Saturday. The possibility of such a fight hinges on McGregor’s recovery and decision to continue his career.
The UFC 329 event marked a significant moment for both fighters, with Holloway securing a win in their second encounter, and McGregor facing another major injury setback.
The future of McGregor’s fighting career remains uncertain as he awaits further medical evaluation and begins his recovery process.
