Andoni Iraola began his tenure as Liverpool head coach with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in their opening match of the summer tour of the US. Despite the injury concern, several players delivered notable performances. Dominik Szoboszlai, who recently signed a five-year contract, was a central figure in Liverpool’s comeback. He scored a crucial equaliser and was instrumental in the build-up to Lewis Koumas’s late goal, demonstrating his continued impact on the team.
Young players also seized their opportunities. Kieran Morrison, who signed a four-year contract in May, impressed with the opening goal. James McConnell and Trey Nyoni were effective in midfield, while Lewis Koumas, returning from a loan spell, contributed significantly to the attacking play, including an assist for Szoboszlai’s goal and scoring one himself.
Looking ahead, Liverpool’s US tour continues with a match against Wrexham in New York on July 30. They will then face Leeds in Chicago on August 2, followed by two home fixtures at Anfield against Monaco on August 9 and Como on August 16.
Sunderland also has upcoming fixtures, including a match against Leeds in New Jersey on July 31 and another against Wrexham in Philadelphia on August 2. Their schedule also includes games against Lens and Rennes in August.
