John Stones: England defender in advanced talks to join Inter Milan

England defender John Stones is reportedly in advanced discussions to join Inter Milan on a free transfer. The centre-half became a free agent at the end of June after his departure from Manchester City. Reports suggest that the Serie A champions have held positive talks with the 32-year-old.

Inter Milan is understood to be leading the race to secure the Premier League and Champions League winner on a two-year contract. This development comes amidst significant interest from various clubs across Europe, including Chelsea and Juventus.

Interest from English Clubs

Several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal, had registered interest in Stones. Juventus also made contact with the England defender’s representatives over the weekend. However, Inter Milan appears to have progressed furthest in their efforts to sign the player.

Chelsea had included Stones on their centre-back shortlist as they aim to strengthen their defensive depth. Similarly, Arsenal was reportedly in the market for a new centre-back, especially after an injury concern to William Saliba during a recent tournament.

Despite the interest from these English clubs, widespread reports indicate that Stones is now in advanced talks with Inter Milan for a move to Serie A. One report suggests the deal is on track to be completed by the end of the current week, with another indicating an agreement is already in place for his switch to the San Siro on a two-year deal.

Stones’ Career and Recent Form

John Stones made 295 appearances for Manchester City after joining the club from Everton in 2016. During his tenure at City, he contributed to a period of significant success for the club.

His achievements with Manchester City include winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup, and the Uefa Super Cup. The former Barnsley defender has also earned 93 international caps for England and was part of the squad that finished third at the World Cup.

Despite his decorated career, Stones’ final campaign at the Etihad Stadium was affected by injuries, limiting him to 15 appearances across all competitions. He was restricted to 439 Premier League minutes in his most recent season due to thigh, calf, and muscular injuries. In the season prior, he played 547 minutes, also impacted by disruptions.

Throughout his 10 seasons at Manchester City, Stones did not play more than 59 per cent of Premier League minutes in any single season. While he made five appearances for England at the World Cup, questions have been raised regarding his fitness history.

Inter Milan’s Defensive Strategy

Inter Milan was aware of the considerable interest in John Stones and actively worked to secure a deal for the 32-year-old. The club is also reportedly interested in Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, who is considered a top defensive target by head coach Christian Chivu.

However, the potential cost associated with a deal for Romero is expected to be substantial. There remains a possibility for Inter Milan to sign both Romero and Stones, particularly if Benjamin Pavard were to depart. As it stands, Inter Milan is primarily focused on securing Stones.

The move would see Stones join the Serie A champions on a free transfer, with terms for a two-year contract reportedly being finalised.
