Liverpool prepare opening offer for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola

Liverpool are preparing an initial offer for Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola following discussions with his representatives. Barcola has emerged as a primary target for the club as they aim to enhance Andoni Iraola’s squad with a proven winger before the upcoming season.

The France international is reportedly keen on a move to Anfield, having indicated a willingness to leave PSG for the Premier League. This encouragement has prompted Liverpool to formalise their interest and initiate negotiations with the European champions in the coming days.

Valuation and contract situation

PSG have reportedly set a valuation for Barcola in the region of £145m, a sum that would constitute a British record transfer fee. However, Liverpool are not expected to meet this figure, aiming instead for a deal closer to £100m. This is partly due to the player’s apparent disinterest in signing a new contract with PSG, as his current deal has two years remaining.

Barcola is understood to have declined an offer for an extension, reportedly having seen his position in Luis Enrique’s team diminish. His desire for a new challenge on Merseyside is believed to be a contributing factor in Liverpool’s pursuit.

Last season, Barcola made 49 appearances for the French club, contributing 13 goals and seven assists. He played a significant role as PSG secured the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League. He primarily operated from the left wing but also demonstrated versatility on the opposite flank.

Previous targets and squad strengthening

Liverpool’s initial focus for a winger was on Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, but a bid for the Ivorian player was rejected. Diomande is now reportedly close to joining Real Madrid after PSG withdrew from a potential deal for him.

Following this, Liverpool shifted their attention to Barcola, whom they have been tracking since his breakthrough at Lyon. Barcola is a product of Lyon’s academy, making his first-team debut in the 2021-22 season. He recorded seven goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances for Lyon before his move to PSG in August 2023.

The club has already made some additions this summer, including the versatile forward Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna and Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes for an initial £55m. However, Iraola is reportedly keen to further strengthen both the attack and defence, with particular concerns regarding defensive options.

Barcola’s potential arrival is seen as a significant acquisition for the club, especially as they look to address the potential departure of Mohamed Salah.

Impact on the squad

Should Liverpool successfully secure Barcola, it would be considered a major coup for Iraola. While Víctor Muñoz is seen as having untapped potential, Barcola is viewed as a more developed player who could provide an immediate injection of pace and quality to Liverpool’s frontline.

The transfer would represent a statement signing for Liverpool as they aim to fill the void left by Salah. Barcola’s verbal agreement to join Liverpool has been reported, though a significant gap in valuation between the two clubs remains a factor in the move.
