The incident at the centre of the controversy occurred during Saltburn’s second XI match against Norton Cricket Club in Division 2. Footage from this game, which took place on a Monday, shows a Saltburn slip fielder allegedly clicking his fingers as the ball passed the outside edge of an opponent’s bat. The club’s wicketkeeper then caught the ball, and an appeal to the umpire resulted in the batter being given out.
The original video has garnered over seven and a half million views on X, leading to the player involved being referred to as ‘Clicky Ponting‘ on social media. Other videos featuring the same player and Saltburn from previous matches have also been shared, alleging similar incidents.
Player suspended and match conceded
In response to the allegations, Saltburn Cricket Club announced that the player at the centre of the complaint has been suspended. The club stated that he will not play for them for the remainder of the season or in the foreseeable future, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
