Germany’s World Cup exit and Wirtz’s performance
Germany has been eliminated from the World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay in Boston. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Paraguay initially taking the lead through Julio Enciso in the first half. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz equalised for Germany from a cross provided by Florian Wirtz. The game then proceeded to a penalty shootout.
During the shootout, Havertz and Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade both had their spot-kicks saved by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Despite two missed opportunities for Paraguay by Antonio Sanabria and Fabian Balbuena, Germany’s Jonathan Tah fired his penalty over the bar, allowing Jose Canale to secure a 4-3 victory for Paraguay. This marks the first time Germany has been defeated in a penalty shootout at a World Cup and their first loss from the spot at international level since 1976.
Florian Wirtz, a Liverpool player, faced criticism for his performance during the tournament. Despite providing an assist in the match against Paraguay, some commentators, including Alan Shearer, suggested he did not make a significant impact in decisive moments. Shearer noted that while Germany had quality players on paper, they did not deliver when it mattered. He specifically mentioned Wirtz’s season at Liverpool, stating he had not performed well, and that this continued into the World Cup.

German media also scrutinised Wirtz’s display. One publication gave him a 4/10 rating, noting an uninspired period despite his strong cross for Havertz’s equaliser. Another publication echoed this sentiment, mentioning an initial good start but then being cut off from the action. Wirtz was substituted deep into extra-time before the penalty shootout.
Nagelsmann’s future and fan reactions
Following Germany’s elimination, head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s future is under scrutiny. Despite the early exit, Nagelsmann stated he would not resign, expressing his desire to continue if the German Football Association (DFB) wished for him to do so. He acknowledged the bitterness of the elimination, particularly as it marks the third consecutive time Germany has failed to reach the last-16 in a World Cup.
Former Germany internationals Thomas Hitzlsperger and Arne Friedrich both suggested that the tournament outcome would place immense pressure on Nagelsmann. Hitzlsperger described Germany’s performance as unacceptable, while Friedrich believed the loss was deserved given their overall play in the tournament and that the journey should continue without Nagelsmann.
The early return to Anfield for Wirtz has led to discussions among Liverpool fans. While some acknowledged his assist against Paraguay, concerns were raised about his decision-making and aggressiveness on the field. Some fans expressed hope that new manager Andoni Iraola would help him improve. One fan commented that Wirtz is a tidy footballer but sometimes lacks the ability to take control of a game.

The name of former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been mentioned in connection with potentially replacing Nagelsmann. When asked about the possibility, Klopp stated he had not thought about it and that it was not the time to discuss such matters, noting his current role as Head of Football at Red Bull.
