England Squad Faces Full-Back Challenges

England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed concerns regarding his full-back selections following an injury to Reece James, who will miss Saturday’s World Cup match against Panama. James, a Chelsea right-back, did not travel with the squad to New Jersey from their Kansas City base for the final Group L fixture. He had reported a hamstring issue after Tuesday’s goalless draw against Ghana.

Tuchel confirmed that James is undergoing an accelerated rehabilitation programme for a minor hamstring issue. While he will not feature in the upcoming match, there is a possibility he could play in England‘s potential last-32 match next week, should the team qualify. However, reports indicate that James remains a significant doubt for the start of the knockout stages.

The injury to James, coupled with a calf issue that led to Tino Livramento returning home from the United States, has brought scrutiny to Tuchel’s decision to include only three recognised full-backs in the squad. The genuine full-backs selected were Djed Spence, James, and Livramento.

Tuchel Defends Selection Strategy

Despite the injuries, Tuchel expressed satisfaction with his defensive options. He stated that he is content with the characteristics and strengths provided by the players he selected. He acknowledged the desire to have all key players available but emphasised the team’s approach to finding solutions in a tournament setting.

Other players in the squad who can cover full-back positions include Nico O’Reilly, who played left-back for Manchester City last season but is primarily a midfielder, and Dan Burn, who is recognised as a centre-back but has also played at left-back. Spence, along with central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa, are considered alternative options for the right-back role.

Tuchel remains confident that James will return to play in the World Cup if England progresses further in the competition. He noted that James has been unable to train for the past two days due to his injury.

Team Availability Updates

In more positive news for the squad, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson are all expected to be available for the match against Panama. Rice and Anderson had missed training on Thursday due to calf and glute issues, respectively, but both returned to training on Friday.

Saka is also ready to start the game. He had previously come off the bench in the opening two matches due to a long-term Achilles tendinitis complaint. England currently leads Group L on goal difference, positioning them well for advancement to the knockout stage.

Elliot Anderson, who started the first two World Cup matches in midfield, is set to complete a transfer to Manchester City from Nottingham Forest. He has agreed to a five-year deal with an option for an additional year, with a salary that could reach £300,000 per week with bonuses. This move is a new club record fee for Manchester City.

Anderson has caps for England since his international debut in September, while James has represented his country 26 times. The team is preparing for their final group stage match against Panama on Saturday at 22:00 BST.
