Diomande transfer saga continues

Liverpool continues its pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, though a breakthrough in negotiations is not considered imminent. The Reds have indicated a willingness to pay for the Ivory Coast international, aiming to add pace to Andoni Iraola’s squad. However, Leipzig is reportedly holding out for a fee for the player they acquired from Leganes last summer.

Despite social media claims of a bid, sources from a German publication dismissed these as inaccurate. Diomande, who has emerged as a talented teenager in German football, is also attracting interest from Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain. His agency, Roc Nation Sports, has been in discussions with several major European clubs, including Liverpool, regarding his future since February.

Leipzig’s managing director, Marcel Schafer, expressed the club’s desire for Diomande to sign a new deal, stating that strong performances are rewarded. However, a German report suggests that Leipzig may need to raise funds this summer, partly due to the cost of appointing Martin Demichelis as their new head coach. This financial need could potentially lead to the sale of key players.

Diomande himself addressed transfer speculation earlier this month, remarking, “I am an RB Leipzig player, but why not? My agents will sort that out. As for me I am more focused on the World Cup, that’s the most important thing.” He also previously expressed admiration for Paris Saint-Germain, a club he has supported since childhood.

RB Leipzig has a history of selling key players to reinvest in new talent, with players like Naby Keita, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ibrahima Konate having moved to Liverpool since 2018. Other notable sales include Timo Werner, Xavi Simons, and Christopher Nkunku. Should negotiations for Diomande not progress, Liverpool has identified other potential targets, including Yankuba Minteh from Brighton & Hove Albion, Said El Mala from Koln, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille. These players would reportedly come at a lower price point, potentially freeing up funds for other areas.

Defensive options and potential market opportunities

In defence, Liverpool is preparing to give new signings Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet opportunities to impress Andoni Iraola for the centre-back position. The departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid as a free agent has created a need for established senior defenders. Joe Gomez is currently the only other player capable of operating comfortably at centre-back.

Leoni, who is 19, is currently recovering from an ACL injury, while Jacquet, who turns 21 next month, has been sidelined since February with a season-ending shoulder issue. Despite their youth and recent injuries, Liverpool reportedly believes they have acquired two of the best defensive prospects from Italy and France, respectively, with their combined cost approaching a significant sum.

The club remains open to exploring “market opportunities” for a more established centre-half before the transfer window closes. Micky van de Ven was recently linked with Liverpool, and Barcelona is also reportedly monitoring his situation at Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham acquired Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton earlier this month, but reports suggest they do not intend to entertain offers for Van de Ven, who joined them in 2023 for a substantial fee.

Cody Gakpo, another Liverpool player, has shown strong form for the Netherlands at the World Cup, scoring twice and assisting once in their 5-1 victory over Sweden. He hinted at a difference in his role and freedom between club and country, potentially sending a message to Iraola regarding his position on the left wing. Iraola will welcome Jeremy Jacquet this summer, whose £55 million deal was signed under Arne Slot’s tenure.
