Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1 Qatar: Bosnia-Herzegovina boost hopes of reaching knockout stage

Bosnia-Herzegovina secured a 3-1 victory against Qatar in their final Group B fixture, enhancing their prospects of advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The team finished with four points, level with Canada, but placed third in the group due to goal difference. This result means they did not automatically qualify for the last 32 but could still progress as one of the best eight third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match, played in Seattle, saw Bosnia-Herzegovina start with strong attacking intent. Within three minutes, Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic tested Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada with shots from distance. The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, described as Bosnia’s youngest-ever player at a World Cup, bypassed two defenders and scored with a powerful right-footed strike from range.

Just six minutes later, Bosnia-Herzegovina extended their lead. Their 40-year-old captain Edin Dzeko, making his 150th appearance for the country, played a crucial role. His volleyed effort deflected off defender Sultan Al Brake and went past Abunada, resulting in an own goal credited to the goalkeeper. Dzeko, who holds national records for goals and appearances, nearly made it 3-0 shortly after, but his low shot hit the post.

Qatar, however, managed to respond. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos reduced the deficit three minutes before half-time, converting a cross from Edmilson Jr. The Asian champions ended the first half strongly, with Pedro Miguel also striking the post after being set up by Akram Afif. Afif also threatened early in the second half, hitting the side-netting as Qatar looked dangerous on counter-attacks, despite lacking a clinical finish.

Second-half consolidation and coaches’ reactions

Bosnia-Herzegovina maintained a solid defence throughout the second half. The victory was sealed in the 80th minute when substitute Ermin Mahmic scored for the second consecutive game. He capitalised on a loose ball following a scramble in the Qatar box, slotting it past Abunada. This marked only Bosnia’s second-ever World Cup win, with their previous victory being a 3-1 result against Iran in 2014.

Head coach Sergej Barbarez expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating it was a “perfect match.” He highlighted the potential of the young players, suggesting that “the next World Cup will be their true, own World Cup.”

Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui reflected on his team’s efforts, noting that despite doing “many, many things well,” football did not reward them on the day. He also voiced hope that this would not be Qatar’s final World Cup match.

With four points, Bosnia-Herzegovina now awaits the results of other matches to confirm their progression to the next round, while Qatar finished at the bottom of Group B with one point.

The match saw Qatar test Bosnia’s defence, particularly in the closing stages of the first half and through counter-attacks in the second. Despite bringing on prolific scorer Almoez Ali for the final 20 minutes, they were unable to find another goal.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s win means they will monitor developments elsewhere to secure their spot in the last 32, where they could potentially face either Germany or the USA.
